International exchanges, which were temporarily suspended due to the spread of the new coronavirus, have resumed actively. Hitotsubashi University has both sent students abroad and welcomed students from overseas universities. Our university aims to develop “global human resources.” These individuals are not only proficient in foreign languages, such as English, but also possess the ability to identify domestic and global issues, gather information and references in English, and solve these issues through analysis and discussion.

The world has changed significantly after the COVID 19 pandemic. We now face many challenges, including income inequality and poverty, environmental issues such as global warming, national security and defense concerns, and an aging society. I hope you will actively engage with these issues with a strong sense of “problem awareness” and “curiosity” throughout your four years as a university student. The theoretical and empirical knowledge of economics you acquire should help you achieve this.

The Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University has been implementing the Global Leaders Program (GLP) since 2013. The program aims to develop leaders with excellent communication skills in English and other languages, who can actively contribute both in Japan and internationally through their analytical expertise in economics. Hitotsubashi University’s slogan, “Captains of Industry,” reflects its commitment to fostering leaders who will shape the future. Specifically, GLP offers basic and advanced courses in English, long-term study abroad opportunities, and short-term overseas research in China and Europe (sometimes conducted online). As part of its global initiatives, the Faculty of Economics has established exchange agreements with several prestigious overseas universities.

This program provides a valuable opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives and engage with the world.
